Brendan Matthew O’Connell Obituary – Rockville, MD Man Remembered After Tragic Car Accident

The Timonium community and all who knew him are mourning the sudden and heartbreaking loss of Brendan Matthew O’Connell, who tragically passed away in a car accident on Wednesday, September 17, 2025. Brendan was 49 years old, and his passing leaves an irreplaceable void for his family, friends, and all whose lives he touched.

Born in Washington, D.C., Brendan was the cherished first child of Elizabeth (Betsy) Terlep and Kevin O’Connell. From a young age, Brendan’s warmth, kindness, and vibrant personality made him unforgettable. Known for his booming voice and infectious smile, Brendan had a unique way of making everyone feel welcome. His generosity and loyalty were hallmarks of his character, and he never met a stranger.

A proud graduate of Gonzaga College High School’s class of 1994, Brendan lived by the school’s motto, “Men for Others,” dedicating himself to helping those around him. He pursued higher education at Hampden-Sydney College, graduating in 1998, and later earned a law degree from the University of Baltimore School of Law. Over the course of his career, Brendan demonstrated versatility and a strong work ethic, achieving success in hospitality, finance, and later, real estate and property management.

While Brendan was accomplished professionally, his greatest pride and joy were his sons, Carter and Briggs. His role as a devoted father defined much of his life. Whether cheering from the sidelines of lacrosse and football games or enjoying rounds of golf with his boys, Brendan’s pride in his sons was evident to all who knew him. He was their loudest cheerleader and constant source of encouragement, supporting their dreams and celebrating their milestones with boundless love.

Athletics was a lifelong passion for Brendan. A skilled lacrosse player in high school and college, he later played in men’s leagues, carrying his competitive spirit well beyond the field. Brendan also loved sailing, competing in races from the Chesapeake Bay to the Caribbean. Friends often described him as a “natural born grinder,” a tenacious competitor who brought determination and passion to every pursuit.

Beyond his athletic and professional accomplishments, Brendan’s tender heart shone brightest in his relationships with family. He was known for the gentle care he showed to his newborn sons, nieces, and nephews, his large frame softened by the love in his touch. Brendan’s Irish heritage was reflected in his warm and welcoming nature, always making others feel like family.

He is survived by his beloved sons Carter and Briggs; his parents Elizabeth and Kevin; stepmother Laurette; sister Megan; brothers Roddy (Lisa), Danny (Hélène), and Patrick (Joey); and a wide circle of extended family, including aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, and countless friends who treasured him deeply.

Visitation will be held on Monday, September 22, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. at Ruck Funeral Home in Towson, Maryland. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow on Tuesday, September 23, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Rockville, with a celebration of life reception at Manor Country Club later that evening.

In lieu of flowers, the family has established a scholarship fund to support the education and needs of Brendan’s sons. Contributions may be made through the GoFundMe page: [insert link].

Brendan’s spirit, love, and legacy will live on forever in the hearts of those who loved him. May he rest in peace.
